Understanding fine motor development and associated difficulties.

Practical resources to support intervention.

True to the now established ILN standards, Zena presents another highly practical and interactive session; this time in 'virtual' association with Karen Al Khina.

Karen is a leading occupational therapist. She runs her own paediatric occupational therapy, physiotherapy plus speech and language therapy practice, Clever Kids Consultancy

Aims of the course

  • To understand the foundation skills needed for fine motor competency
  • To know a range of activities that can promote targeted fine motor skill in the context of intervention
  • To be able to monitor and evidence progress through fine motor intervention

    Target audience
  • SENCOS, Inclusion Leads, teachers, teaching assistants and all those with an interest in fine motor development

Identifying and supporting autism in the early years

  • Recognising autistic behaviours in early years' children
  • Enabling SENCOS to follow up concerns and support early years' practitioners with initial assessments, strategies and interventions​

Every year, scores of new children arrive into our early years' settings. Early years' practitioners have the essential job of ensuring that all children have a strong start to their early school career. Some children settle quicker and more easily than others; occasionally, there are those who present with much greater challenges for teachers. For a small number of these pupils, autism may be a realistic part of their identity that may, or may not, have been identified. A SENCO who is confident in identifying the signs and offering appropriate strategies to teachers, can do a significant amount of positive work for these pupils prior to the opportunity of support from outside agencies.  This introduction will give SENCOS greater confidence in providing the appropriate response, strategies and interventions to support colleagues in the early years, when considering autistic spectrum condition.
