SEND Forum – Autumn 2020
Welcome to the hidden web page of the autumn 2020 SEND Forum. The aim is to provide all the necessary slideshows, handouts and resources to enable delegates to deliver, share or cascade the information to colleagues back in school; indeed, a number of delegates have successfully done this with our Forum materials. Furthermore, it makes accessing resources and web links much easier, with everything stored in one place. Our copyright terms are that attending delegates are free to use the materials within their own school only. We hope you find this helpful!

Lorraine Peterson OBE, SEND consultant and former CEO of NASEN, explains to readers of Special Needs Jungle what’s missing from the mainstream guidance and why schools need to also read the specialist document to be able to support all the children in their school. The future of Local Area SEND inspections
Ofsted and CQC began inspecting area SEND arrangements in May 2016; they have inspected 117 local areas to date. They plan to return to full area SEND inspections to complete the current cycle as soon as it is right to do so.
An evaluation of the framework for these inspections was published in July and can be found at tinyurl.com/y2a6josf.
You can find a commentary on the future of Local Area SEND inspections from Amanda Spielman HMCI at tinyurl.com/y9ewodme
This may be the time to audit social and emotional learning
‘Improving Social and Emotional Learning in Primary Schools’ reviews the best available research to offer school leaders six practical recommendations to support good SEL for all children. It stresses this is especially important for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and other vulnerable groups, who, on average, have weaker SEL skills at all ages than their better-off classmates.
Visit tinyurl.com/y53syouq for the guidance report and accompanying resources, including an audit tool to generate staff discussion around the issues.
